According to the folklore about the Kandepitawala Tank, otherwise known as the Yakakadulla Tank, this tank dates back to the reign of King Agbo II. It is said that during that reign, an irrigation system called the Yakabendi Kadulla and Thorapitiya Tank was built and later it was destroyed. This destroyed irrigation system was later reconstructed and a part of the Kandepitawala village was submerged, after which this irrigation industry has been known as the Kandepitawala Tank.
At present, the Kandepitawala Tank has a high capacity for irrigation and is fed by the left bank of the Kalu Ganga. The tank embankment here is 115 meters long and has two sluices and a spillway. Also, 676 agricultural plots of land are cultivated with this tank water and water is also obtained for domestic purposes in the area.
In addition, this lake is used for fishing and has also attracted the attention of tourists due to the beautiful surrounding environment.
