It belongs to the two Grama Niladhari divisions of Narangamuwa and Ranamuregama and is a place of historical value as well as natural beauty. There are several legends about this lake.
One of the legends is that when Rama hit a spear sent by Ravana, a part of the rock called Lakegala collapsed and covered the lake at that place. Later, it is believed that its water emerged from the land where “Narangamuwa Lake” is located and this “Narangamuwa Lake” was created.
There is also a legend that a tribal leader named “Narada” dug a large lake from a cow’s horn and used it for agriculture, so this lake is called Narangamuwa Lake.
Also, since in the past, this lake was a place where the cow species “Gavaru” lived, this lake is also called “Gavaru Lake”. Later, the “lake mudded by the Gavaru” was called “Gavaramada Lake”. (“Gavaru” is a large-bodied, brown-colored animal. This animal is a member of the cattle family, which includes the bull, bison, and yak. They are very strong animals. The CEYLON GAUR is an extinct mammal that lived in Sri Lanka.)
Located between the Kaluganga Reservoir and the Lakegala mountain range, this natural reservoir provides water uniformly throughout the year. About one hundred acres of agricultural land are cultivated with this water. Nowadays, tourists have the opportunity to cross the lake using boats on this lake. Currently, the lake and the surrounding area are famous as an eco-tourism destination and an agricultural tourism destination.
