Karagahatenna FM transmitter, operated by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, provides clear audio reception to listeners in the North Central, North Western, Matale and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka. The transmitter, which commenced operations in 1983 and was completed in 1985, is located on the Karagahatenna mountain peak near the town of Rattota.
The road to Karagahatenna passes through a tea and cardamom plantation managed by Lilan Private Company.
Karagahatenna Transmitter Complex
In addition to the SLBC FM transmitter, the Karagahatenna summit also houses the Independent Television Transmitter, TNL (TV and Radio) Transmitter, Sri Lanka Air Force Repeater and Sri Lanka Navy Transmitter. Therefore, access to this site requires permission from the relevant institution.
Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation’s transmitter broadcasts seven radio services, including City FM, Commercial Service, Swadeshiya Service, Thendral, Rajarata Service and Radio Sri Lanka, covering the Eastern, North Western and North Central Provinces. Modern 10 kW transmitters with RDS are used for this purpose.

The Independent Television Transmitter broadcasts Independent Television Service (VHF 09) and Lakhanda Radio and Vasanthma FM (102.8 MHz) while the TNL Transmitter broadcasts Supreme TV and Supreme Radio from VHF 11 and 89.1 MHz.
Sri Lanka Air Force’s most powerful transmitter is the Karagahatenna transmitter. The Air Force and Navy transmitters provide radio communications between Air Force and Navy bases in various parts of the island.
Gammaduwa Transmitter
Gammaduwa is another peak near Karagahatenna.
There are about seven transmission towers on this peak, from which several private radio and television stations broadcast to the North Central, North Western and Eastern Provinces. Many radio and TV channels such as Hiru FM, Sha FM, Gold FM, Sirasa FM, Rangiri Sri Lanka Radio, Rangiri Television Service, Hiru TV, Sirasa TV, Derana ect are broadcast via Gammaduwa.
We have received reports that some radio stations broadcasting via Karagahatenna Gammaduwa can also be received in various parts of India.
