Location

There are entrances to Dumbara Falls from Matale and Kandy districts.

    • Matale district,

Two entrances

  1. Ratthota – The total distance from Matale is 56 kilometers. (Via Atanwala village via Rattota, Riverston, Pitawala, Ratninda.
  2. Laggala  –  The total distance from Laggala New Town is 46 kilometers.  (Via Atanwala via Illukkumbura, Mahalakotwa, Meda Ela, Ratninda)
Accessibility
  • Since some development work is underway on the road, it is better to come in a suitable vehicle.Vehicles can only travel up to Atanwala village.
Best Time to visit
  • The weather is mild from January to May, but traveling during the rainy season is very difficult. 
  • Since you must walk, it is advisable to leave early in the morning.

  • Related gear as required (Hiking boots, comfortable clothing, Hat and a raincoat are essential)
  • supplies like water, snacks, and a first aid kit, as there are no facilities near the Dumbara waterfall. Be prepared for leeches on the road leading to the waterfall.
  • It is very important to seek the assistance of a reputable and experienced guide to travel here.
  • Non-biodegradable materials such as plastic and polythene should not be brought into this ecological system, as there is no facility to dispose of such materials. It is prohibited to collect and carry any living or non-living part of this protected area.

Dumbara Ella is a beautiful waterfall located far from human habitation in the Knuckles Conservation Area. This place belongs to the Atanwala Grama Niladhari Division of the Laggala Divisional Secretariat and is located very close to the KaluPahana area. The green color of the upper mountains and the thick mist that permeates the environment are a gift from Mother Nature to Dumbara Ella.

It is a great place for those who love nature and explore nature. The waterfall, which is 15-20 meters high, is a home for freshwater fish species. In addition, various birds and snakes such as the Highland Hump-Nosed Pit Viper (Hypnale nepa) which is endemic to Sri Lanka, can also be seen. Enjoying this unique ecosystem is the right of all of you who love nature, and it is our responsibility to protect it.
