The ancient historical Bambawa Rajamaha Viharaya, which highlights many historical phenomena during the reign of King Vatthagamini Abhaya or Walagamba, which marked a proud era in the history of Sri Lanka, can be introduced as a mirror that spreads its rays throughout the area.
When you come towards Matale, about 1km from the Galewela town in the historical Matale district, you can see this historical sacred site, surrounded by a beautiful environment, bordered by a beautiful mountain range and a beautiful lake.
This village of Bambawa, which is considered to be the birthplace of Kuveniya, a Yakkha tribe woman who lived in this country before the Aryans arrived in this country, is said to have been hidden in a rock by the kings who organized an army against the Indian Dravidians who invaded Sri Lanka during the reign of King Valagamba. Later, this temple, which had been in the forest for a long time, was renovated by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe, the king of the Kanda Udarata kingdom, and donated to the Sangha for the perpetuation of the Sambuddha Sasana.
The temple grounds built around the cave, the rock and the inscription, the stone well, the moonstone, the stone bed and the beautiful stone steps provide living evidence of the reign of that time.
The annual procession held at the four temples of Galebandara, Vishnu, Pattini and Kataragama, which are under the patronage of the deity Galebandara, the ruler of the area, clearly demonstrates the past glory of the Kanda Udarata kingdom.
