wasgamuwa is known to be one of sri lanka’s best destinations to enjoy wildlife. The name Wasgamuwa is derived from the words walasa (bear) and gamuwa (woods). The national park Spanning over 36,900 hectares bordered by the mahaweli river inhabits a variety of species with a spectacular landscape which was initially obliged to provide shelter for the displaced animals during the Mahaweli project. It inhabits 23 mammal species including Elephants which can be spotted in herds mostly, among them Sri lankan leopard and sloth bear are rare while water buffaloes and Sri Lanka axis deer are commonly seen. It is also the home for 143 bird species and 17 species of reptiles including red faced malkoha, Sri Lanka jungle fowl, water monitor and mugger crocodile, from which the peafowl is commonly spotted. However many tourists visit to see the herds of wild elephants which is the main tourist attraction in Wasgamuwa.
